“It is a hardy tree... Lately it has been much noticed in the daily papers under the name of the 'Hardy Rubber-tree,' and as a possible source of rubber in cold climates. — Sargent, 1911”
Profile
Directed Wilson's China expeditions that introduced Eucommia to North America, and publicly commented on the prospects of a Eucommia rubber industry.
Story
Sargent (1841–1927) was the father of American dendrology and the first director of the Arnold Arboretum. He supported Wilson's China expeditions through private fundraising, and Eucommia was one of the expeditions' economic-botany targets. The Eucommia that arrived in 1907 is now an iconic old tree at the Arboretum, featured in a 2020 Arnoldia story.
Sargent remained cool-headed about the Eucommia rubber boom: in 1911 he noted that Eucommia was being hyped by the press for its 'cold-climate rubber' potential, and five years later stated bluntly that its real significance for the rubber industry fell far short of the newspaper coverage. This judgment proved accurate, and it exemplified his style of combining collecting enthusiasm with scientific assessment.
Milestones
- 1907–1909 Directed the Arnold Arboretum's first China expedition
- 1907 Eucommia accession 14538*A was planted out at the Arboretum
- 1911 Wrote that Eucommia was being widely reported in newspapers as the 'Hardy Rubber-tree'
- 1916 Reassessed Eucommia: its value to rubber manufacturers fell far short of the newspaper hype
Key Contributions
