Legend says he healed with this bark and “attained the Way”; the herb and tree bear his name.
As the legend goes, a young boat-tracker named Du Zhong, by Dongting Lake, suffered chronic back and knee pain from years of hauling. Guided by a sage, he found a bark “threaded with silver silk that would not snap” and grew strong. Searching for more to heal his fellows, he collapsed and sank into the lake clutching the bark; those who took it recovered, and named the bark “Du Zhong” in his memory.
Another account says “one Du Zhong took this and attained the Way, hence the name”, giving the aliases “Sixian” and “Sizhong”. However the tale varies, the name carries an ancient healer’s spirit of self-sacrifice — the very starting point of China’s relationship with this tree.
