Proposed that Eucommia leaves could substitute for Eucommia bark in medicine, promoting comprehensive utilization of Eucommia resources
Professor Li Jiashi was the founder of the Chinese materia medica authentication discipline at the School of Chinese Pharmacy, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Addressing the resource bottleneck of Eucommia bark—whose harvesting requires 15–20 years of tree growth and easily damages the trees—she demonstrated through comparative chemical studies of the bark and leaves that their active constituents are essentially the same, proposing the use of leaves in place of bark and opening a path for the sustainable utilization of Eucommia resources.
This academic proposition won the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Third Prize) and profoundly influenced subsequent policy: in 2002, Eucommia leaves were listed together with Eucommia bark among substances usable in health foods, and the 2005 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia formally included Eucommia leaves with chlorogenic acid as the content-determination marker. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine established a research studio on her academic thought to carry forward her scholarly contributions.
