Japanese scholar who systematically isolated and identified Eucommia lignan constituents in the 1980s
Takeshi Deyama worked at the Central Research Laboratories of Yomeishu Seizo Co. (Nagano, Japan) and is one of the international pioneers in chemical research on Eucommia constituents. Beginning in 1983, he published a six-part series on Eucommia constituents in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, systematically isolating and identifying lignans and their glycosides from Eucommia bark and laying the chemical foundation for research on its antihypertensive and antioxidant effects.
He was also the first to study the metabolic transformation of Eucommia lignans by human intestinal flora, finding that their end product is enterolactone, which has estrogen-like activity—revealing a possible modern mechanism for Eucommia's 'kidney-tonifying' efficacy. He reported these results at the first International Symposium on Eucommia ulmoides in 2007 and maintained long-term exchanges with the Chinese Eucommia research community.
