Used chemical modification to unlock the performance of Eucommia elastomer, turning it into a new material for golf balls and 3D printing.
Uyama Hiroshi is professor of applied chemistry at Osaka University and a polymer materials specialist. Attracted by the Eucommia elastomer's 'high molecular weight and beautiful stereostructure', he held that this enzyme-built natural structure is beyond the reach of artificial chemical synthesis, and set out to endow it with new functions through chemical modification, using dynamic crosslinking to raise the impact resistance of brittle polylactic acid by an order of magnitude.
With NEDO project support, he and Nakazawa Yoshihisa's team upgraded Eucommia from a 'health-tea ingredient' to an industrial new material: modified polylactic acid for golf-ball covers and 3D-printing filament, expanding further toward cosmetic containers and medical menisci, making Eucommia elastomer a flagship example of plant-based biopolymers.
