Created Yougui Wan (Restoring the Right Pill) with prominent use of Eucommia, establishing Eucommia's classic status in formulas that warm and tonify kidney yang
Zhang Jingyue (1563–1640), given name Jiebin, was a renowned Ming dynasty physician and founder of the Warm Tonic school. His Yougui Wan, created in the Complete Works of Jingyue, combines Eucommia with prepared Rehmannia, deer antler glue, cinnamon, aconite, and other herbs to warm and tonify kidney yang and replenish essence and marrow, treating weak and aching lower back and knees, impotence, and seminal emission in the aged and chronically ill. It is the foremost formula for warming and tonifying kidney yang in TCM.
In Yougui Wan, Eucommia—processed with ginger juice—plays the core role of tonifying the liver and kidney, strengthening sinews and bones, and relieving low back pain. The formula remains in the National Essential Medicines List and major Chinese patent medicine catalogs. Zhang Jingyue's use of Eucommia elevated it from a single-herb remedy to an important pillar of Warm Tonic school formulations, shaping prescribing patterns for the following four centuries.
