Advocate of ‘ethnomedicine’ who popularized Eucommia to the Japanese public through his books.
Tsuneo Namba (1931—2004) was a renowned Japanese pharmacognosist, professor and director at the Institute of Natural Medicine (Toyama), a proponent of ‘ethnomedicine’ (comparative ethnic pharmacology), and honorary/visiting professor at several Chinese TCM universities (China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing, Chengdu, Hubei).
Across some 130 books, translations and edited works, his popular title ‘When tired, take a Eucommia break’ carried Eucommia’s Eastern wellness tradition to the Japanese public, while his edited Introduction to Pharmacognosy systematically covered Eucommia’s selection and effects — broadening Eucommia’s recognition and acceptance in Japan.
