Revealed Eucommia’s anti-ageing effects, sparking Japan’s “Eucommia boom”.
Japan was a pivotal stop on Eucommia’s path into the global health market. The Japanese scholar Shuhichi Takahashi seized on the phrase “resists ageing” in the ancient claim that Eucommia “lightens the body and resists ageing”, and studied its mechanisms for human health and anti-ageing.
His lecture on Japan’s NHK caused a sensation, spurring dozens of Eucommia companies and about ¥60 billion in output within two years, and driving large-scale imports of Eucommia leaf from China amid a lasting “Eucommia-tea craze”. The lesson for China’s industry: only when mechanisms are well understood will consumers embrace a product.
