陶弘景（456—536），字通明，丹阳秣陵人，南朝著名医药学家。他将《神农本草经》与《名医别录》合编为《本草经集注》，开创了以朱墨分书、加注按语的本草编纂体例。杜仲条下他详细辨析了'上虞'产地为豫州之虞而非会稽上虞县，体现出严谨的产地考证意识。

Story
Tao Hongjing (456–536), courtesy name Tongming, of Moling in Danyang, was a renowned physician-pharmacologist of the Southern Dynasties. He combined Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica and the Mingyi Bielu into the Bencao Jing Jizhu, pioneering a compilation format that distinguished sources in red and black ink with added commentary. Under the Eucommia entry he carefully argued that the provenance 'Shangyu' referred to Yu in Yuzhou, not Shangyu County in Kuaiji—demonstrating rigorous textual criticism of origins.
His classic description of Eucommia—'resembling Houpo; best when breaking reveals abundant white threads'—accurately captured the species' unique identifying feature: bark rich in Eucommia gum that shows silvery-white threads when snapped. Modern pharmacognostic research (such as the varietal history in the study of 'Chuan Duzhong') confirms that the traits he described match Eucommia ulmoides of the family Eucommiaceae exactly—a model of morphological accuracy in the history of materia medica.
