World authority on hollies (‘Holly Hu’) who praised Eucommia’s tonic value, ranking it with ginseng.
Hu Shiu-Ying (1910—2012), born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, was a botanist at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum and a world authority on the holly family — of the world’s 400-plus Ilex species she named over 300, earning the nickname ‘Holly Hu’; in 1949 she became the first woman to earn a PhD in her field at Harvard, and authored Food Plants of China.
A world-class scholar of Chinese plant resources, she held Eucommia — a tree endemic to China — in high regard: by multiple accounts, during 1980s lectures in China she ranked Eucommia alongside ginseng among the great tonics and praised its health benefits — an international footnote to Eucommia’s value from a scholar at the summit of world botany.
